Episode 6

We both felt good about this one after we finished.  Good topics, some good discussion, and a few chuckles.  We really need a new game, though.  Please send suggestions, we’re just not that creative!

Genetic Engineering for Climate and Profit!

We just touch on this, mainly relating it to the story from last week’s episode about another paper related to bioethics.

Abstract
Anthropogenic climate change is arguably one of the biggest problems that confront us today. There is ample evidence that climate change is likely to affect adversely many aspects of life for all people around the world, and that existing solutions such as geoengineering might be too risky and ordinary behavioural and market solutions might not be sufficient to mitigate climate change. In this paper, we consider a new kind of solution to climate change, what we call human engineering, which involves biomedical modifications of humans so that they can mitigate and/or adapt to climate change. We argue that human engineering is potentially less risky than geoengineering and that it could help behavioural and market solutions succeed in mitigating climate change. We also consider some possible ethical concerns regarding human engineering such as its safety, the implications of human engineering for our children and for the society, and we argue that these concerns can be addressed. Our upshot is that human engineering
deserves further consideration in the debate about climate change.

Ender’s Game the Porno! and other missing details

Evolution of a Complaint, in reverse order:

A middle school teacher who read to his students from Ender’s Game is on “administrative leave” because a parent complained to the school that Orson Scott Card’s classic novel is “pornographic.” The parent also went to the local police, who have not yet pressed criminal charges against the teacher, according to the Aiken, SC Standard.

Once again, a little digging (thank Brian, I’m a lazy bastard) makes obvious some very selective omissions.  Like that the original complaint included allegations that the teacher read internet porn to the class.  What we don’t get is that it seems to us like the story would sell better with the porn angle!

Junkyard Prophet Rocks Atrocity

High school students in Dunkerton, Iowa were expecting an assembly about bullying and making good choices. What they got instead was the Christian rap/hard rock band called Junkyard Prophet delivering an anti-gay and anti-abortion rant.

Matt – Cognitive Dissonance Podcast

A podcast so good, I’ve had to stop listening before we record ours – because we cover a lot of the same stories and I don’t want to unintentionally rip them off.  They are funnier, more polished, and waaaaaaay more popular than we are, and rightfully so.  Give them a listen, and if you like the podcast, click the link on their page to vote for them in the Readers’ Choice awards! (and subscribe and review in iTunes)

The Game:

Lawyer: Slain teen’s girlfriend heard altercation

Man, what a crappy story, with a potential for a crappy ending.  It looks like more evidence is coming in now, but it still could be a tough conviction to get under Florida law.

Listener Feedback:

We go over and respond to our listener comments, this time, it’s friend of the show, cwebb again.  Thanks, cwebb!  atheistsocialworker.com

  1. I think we have a psychic connections because I was just discussing the Trayvon Martin case with my classmate at our internship last night. She is a black female and she is understandably upset that this young black man was tragically shot. Of course she blames the racist police department for not arresting this Zimmerman fellow. She based this on what her family has experienced her in Raleigh, NC.

I said exactly the same thing both Matt and Brian said.

    1) the police are probably gathering evidence to make sure they can convict this guy. The worst thing the could do was to arrest and try him immediately.

    2) The Florida law of “stand your ground” may make it hard to convict this man. It opens up a lot of loopholes a savvy lawyer can exploit.

I told her I hope this man gets brought to justice for what he has done. I told her I know there is a violent history between blacks and the police but, when you take emotion out of it and look at it rationally, you can see why this case has been slow moving. We all want justice NOW but we have to make sure that justice is served correctly and fairly.

All I need is a couple more confirmed psychic moments and then I am going after the JREFF $1 million prize (I may cut you guys a slice)
